| Ceylon tea facts –
The wonder that is Ceylon tea.
We at Eswaran Brothers are proud of the quality of the Ceylon teas
which we have shipped over the past 40 years. We present below a
short synopsis of Ceylon tea and it’s superlative varieties.
Ceylon has almost become a generic name all over the world for quality
tea. This instant word association is not only a result of Sri Lanka’s
status as the largest tea exporter in the world. It is also a recognition
of the unique properties of the tea and the land it comes from.
When Eswaran Brothers started exporting tea in 1963, Ceylon’s
dormant tea industry was slowly embarking on the long process of
modernization.
Since the early 1990’s, Sri Lanka has become the world’s
largest exporter of tea. Around 20% of Sri Lanka’s export
earnings come from tea. The tea industry is also the largest single
employer.
Ceylon tea’s main strength is not just a matter of production
capacity. It is the wide range of excellent teas produced in the
various tea producing regions of the country.
These regions are mainly situated in the central and southern hill
areas of the island. The tea is categorized according to the elevation
of the cultivation. High grown teas are produced in the highest
elevations (above 1200 meters) of Newara-Eliya, Dimbulla and Uva.
Medium growns between 600 meters and 1200 meters are mainly found
in the hills around Kandy. Low growns are found below 600 meters
in the foothills of the southern part of the island.
The delight of Ceylon tea is the variety of flavours produced by
the agro climatic conditions of each region.
