GOING BEYOND GREAT TEA – AND HELPING TO PRESERVE OUR ENVIRONMENT.
At Eswaran Brothers, our sustainable business practices are at the epicentre of everything we do. Our objective is to maintain a world which will be better than we found it. We constantly innovate to be a net positive company.
In compliance to ISO 14001 quality standards, our workforce has been diligent in conserving resources such as water and electricity, with optimum results. Likewise, we continue to nurture similar practices in order to uphold these outcomes on a regular basis. These initiatives ensure that we deliver consistent value across all the stakeholder groups that we operate in.
THE WORLD’S FIRST CARBONNEUTRAL ® TEA
In December 2010, Eswaran Tea acclaimed CarbonNeutral® status – thereby pioneering this mark of recognition in the global tea industry. As we have been constantly vigilant of the impact of our actions on our environment, reducing our carbon footprints in many ways than one has been one of the most prestigious achievements in our 50+ years of business progress.
We work hand in hand with local farmers to improve their livelihoods, and also replant trees in reforested areas such as Hiniduma. Known by the name of ‘Hiniduma Biolink Project, Sri Lanka’, this initiative is led by Conservation Carbon Company (CCC) and Rainforest Rescue International (RRI) to plant over 90 species of trees for maintaining a diversified ecosystem.
Beginning with only 10.88ha of rainforest land, the project aims to expand to up to 20,000ha, which in turn shall affect up to 1500 families. Eswaran Tea has collaborated with this project by incurring the cost of trees planted. For every 100 packs of Olinda Green Tea sold, we have undertaken the responsibility to plant one tree and contribute towards a clean, green and healthful ecosystem in the south west region of Sri Lanka.
As a result, our brand sources carbon credits in these ways to eventually give you a tea that not just adores you, but also adores our dear planet.
ORGANIC AND FOREST-FRIENDLY
Our teas are grown beyond the boundaries of traditional tea plantations. Cultivated organically, our tea plantations feature forest-friendly atmospheres and biodiversity.
This enables us to source our teas with zero fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides, while also preventing soil erosion which can otherwise take place in conventional tea estates.
Eswaran Tea has been a major driving force in initiating the Hiniduma Conservation Carbon Programme. Located in the South West region of Sri Lanka, the Hiniduma rainforest is one of the last remaining rainforests in the country, after the onset of agricultural communities in the area.
Liaising with farmers along the Kanneliya Reserve buffer zone, Eswaran Tea has created a forest replantation programme. In partnership with Conservation Carbon Company and Rainforest Rescue International, we have been striving to plant trees in forest areas in order to preserve these ecosystems in their all-natural glory.
ECO-FRIENDLY TEA FACTORIES
Reducing our carbon footprint is something which starts from the very first steps that are taken to produce our teas. That’s why we conduct comprehensive studies to monitor energy consumption in our factories to reduce wastage and costs, while increasing efficiency.
FAIR TRADE, AND ETHICAL
Practicing Fair Trade initiatives have been of vital importance here at Eswaran Tea, throughout its existence in the business of sourcing quality tea. Ensuring fair prices for harvests to farmers have assisted us to sustain quality workmanship, while also giving us the opportunity to lend a helping hand for improving their living standards.
As we continue to reap the benefits of maintaining strong relationships with our farmers via Fair Trade, these benefits also carry over to our consumers as every brew signifies an honest and equitable cup of tea, every time.
A SIGNATORY TO THE UN GLOBAL COMPACT
The United Nations Global Compact is an initiative which encourages businesses worldwide to foster sustainable and socially responsible business practices. In collaboration with UN agencies, labour organisations as well as the general society, businesses are liable to report their sustainable practices on a regular basis.
A winner of the ‘Responsible Business’ award at the Social Pioneer Awards (2012) and a nominee for ‘Sustainable Business of the Year’ at the UK Environment and Energy Awards (2013), Eswaran Teas continues its progress in establishing a repertoire of decent, fair and eco-friendly business operations hitherto.
